Last Drop Distillers debuts 50-year-old whisky

The Last Drop Distillers has made its first move into spirits creation with the launch of a 50-year-old blended whisky.

The Last Drop 50 Year Old Signature Blended Scotch Whisky is the 22nd release from the Sazerac-owned bottler. It is also the company’s inaugural signature blend.

Rebecca Jago, managing director of The Last Drop, said: “This wonderful 50-year-old blend marks a significant moment for The Last Drop as our first foray into the creation, as well as curation, of remarkable spirits.”

The whisky is also the first expression created by new master blender Colin Scott, who joined The Last Drop Distillers in September 2020.

Scott has more than 50 years of experience in the industry and was the former master blender for Pernod Ricard’s Scotch whisky arm Chivas Brothers.

Scott said: “In nearly half a century in the industry, this is only the second 50-year-old blend I have created, and I’m immensely proud both of the complexity of the whisky and of its significance: as The Last Drop’s first signature blend, and as my inaugural release with them.”

Limited to 500 bottles globally, the new expression is made from the company’s inventory of maturing malt and grain whiskies, and aged blends.

The whisky began as a new distillate of single malts and grains, which were filled into Sherry and Bourbon casks more than 50 years ago.

The resulting liquid offers dried fruits and scented floral notes, along with sweet spices and creamy toffee. The finish provides hints of liquorice, spring flowers and oak.

As with all The Last Drop releases, each bottle comes packaged with a 50ml miniature of the same liquid and a pocket-sized tasting book.

The whisky is priced at RRP £3,250 (US$4,619) and available from The Last Drop website and fine spirits retailers.

Scott is one of the six founding members of The Assembly, which was formed by The Last Drop in 2020. The ‘cross-category’ forum is made up of spirits veterans who will share their knowledge, ideas and expertise across the industry.

Jago added: “We hope this will be the first of many exciting new creations from the team, particularly as we see the contributions of the members of The Assembly taking shape.”

Buffalo Trace owner Sazerac acquired The Last Drop Distillers in 2016.
